Clemson University: We are seeking a technician to assist with ecological studies investigating structure, function, and carbon cycling in forested ecosystems and coastal oligohaline marshes in the southeastern US. Our estuarine marsh studies are established to monitor vegetative community composition of freshwater and oligohaline marshes and relate them to soil salinity levels, which are in turn influenced by shipping harbor river modifications. Tidal freshwater forested wetlands studies focus on process-based questions involving abiotic and biotic transformations occurring along gradients spanning oligohaline marsh to tidal freshwater forest and beyond to include seasonally tidal and non-tidal riverine forests. Forested wetland (and upland) studies typically include surveys of aboveground biomass and productivity (e.g., for carbon assessments), and tree physiological response to atmospheric and terrestrial drivers as inferred through dedicated sap flow studies. Routine responsibilities will include monthly visits to established marsh and forest study sites to download water sensor data and maintain sensors and field equipment, collect measurements of tree growth, and collection of tree leaf litter samples. Most fieldwork will require piloting a 60 hp outboard boat followed by hiking floatant marshes and flooded swamps. Routine lab duties include identifying, counting, and weighing marsh plants and weighing leaf litter samples. Additional duties may include new plot setup, digitizing and summarizing data in Excel, and other duties as assigned. Travel and overnight stays are required but are generally limited to 3 – 4 days away per month. Candidates must have a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree from accredited college at the time of hiring. A valid US driver’s license and the ability to swim are mandatory. The candidate must also be in adequate physical condition to competently traverse floating estuarine marshes on foot, collect vegetation samples, and carry them back to the boat. The ability to orienteer using a GPS and handheld compass is necessary and can be taught if needed. Field conditions will be hot and humid in summer, and buggy during some times of the year. Proficiency at MS Office suite programs such as Word and Excel is expected. Preference will be given to individuals with a demonstrated ability to work both independently and within small groups as corroborated by the candidate’s professional references. Location: Clemson University’s Baruch Institute of Coastal Ecology and Forest Science, Georgetown, SC. Term: Full-time, temporary one year appointment. Salary Range: $32-40k. Closing Date: 29 June 2023. To Apply: To apply for this position please visit https://www.clemson.edu/careers/ and search (as an external applicant) for job 107820. Please submit a cover letter and your Curriculum Vitae that includes (3) professional references via the Clemson careers porthole. Posted: 6/20/23.

Purdue University: The Oakley lab is looking for a research technician for an NSF funded project connecting the genotype-phenotype-fitness map for cold acclimation, an adaptive plastic response in seasonally freezing environments. Cold acclimation is common in plants throughout the temperate zones and involves dramatic metabolic and physiological changes in response to cool autumn temperatures which condition winter freezing tolerance. It is likely to be energetically costly, particularly in cool but non-freezing environments, and climate change may exacerbate the negative fitness consequences of this cost. This project (in collaboration with Brian Dilkes) is a unique opportunity to investigate the effects of a naturally occurring sequence polymorphism in a key regulatory gene on molecular and organismal phenotypes and fitness in contrasting conditions that mimic the native environments in which the ecotypes evolved. A loss of function allele in a gene that encodes the transcription factor CBF2 explains a large amount of ecotypic differences in cold acclimated freezing tolerance, and long term-field study suggests this locus is responsible for a genetic trade-off. Planned experiments will use manipulated alleles of CBF2 using near isogenic and genetically engineered lines (in the native genetic backgrounds) in growth chamber experiments with longitudinal sampling of genome-wide gene expression (including allele specific expression), untargeted metabolomics, growth rates and other traits, and ultimately fitness. Research activities will include (but are not limited to): Performing hand pollinations to generate seed for allele specific expression analyses, and to construct lines to directly test interactions between cis- and trans- effects on traits and fitness. Creation of lines with loss of function mutations in CBF2 in different ecotypic backgrounds using CRISPR-Cas9. Assisting with growth chamber experiments to measure gene expression, metabolites, traits, and fitness. Additional duties will include supervision of undergraduate research assistants, lab management tasks, and general plant care and lab upkeep. Other research in the lab is exploring the costs of cold acclimation in emerging perennial model species, and investigating the evolutionary ecology and genetics of heterosis, epistasis, and maladaptation. There may be opportunities to present research at a conference and/or be a co-author on publications. A Bachelor's degree in ecology & evolution, genetics, plant biology, or related field is required. This position has a fixed term of 1 year and is ideally suited for someone who has very recently completed their degree and is looking to gain more experience prior to entering graduate school. No specific skills are required, but some combination of experience in experimental biology, molecular genetics, plant care, and bioinformatics is strongly preferred. Start date is September 5, 2023, but this is flexible within reason. Starting salary is $35K. Applicants should send (as a single PDF attachment): CV or resume, a short paragraph stating your research interests and fit to the lab and project, and the names and contact information for two professional references. Washington State University: Postdoc and technician positions in measurement and modeling of plant physiological ecology. Two positions are available in the Department of Biology to study the impacts of rising vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and CO2 on the mortality likelihood of woody plants. The positions are a postdoctoral fellow and a research technician that are part of a National Science Foundation funded project led by Drs Nate McDowell and Alex Pivovaroff. The postdoc position will focus on modeling the impacts of rising VPD and CO2 on the risk of hydraulic failure and carbon starvation in trees. The research technician will aid in this objective by providing empirical data on cuticular conductance and its dependence on VPD, as well as other empirical measurements associated with hydraulic failure and carbon starvation. This project leverages the SPRUCE effort in which trees are exposed to a range of VPD and CO2 conditions allowing direct tests of the role of VPD vs CO2 on mortality, and leverages Sapfluxnet through which the model will be constrained with a global set of transpiration observations. The successful candidates will work with a team of international scientists from Washington State University, INRA (France), Pacific Northwest National Lab, Glendale Community College, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and CREAF (Spain). Postdoc required skills: a PhD granted in the last five years, experience using process models including plant physiology and/or ecosystem processes, strong written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated ability to publish manuscripts, strong ability to work in a team environment.
